titanic

last night carolyn and i went to signature theatre to watch the show titanic. it was amazing. the intensity of the characters in their moments knowing death was coming… speechless. the only negative i have about the show was this one lady whose voice was just over the top compared to the other cast. her voice was basically more operatic than the others. that’s the best i could do to describe her. dinner before the show was a whole other matter.

we arrived in the area around an hour and a half before the how started. we wanted to get some grub and a couple of drinks before the show. the theatre’s menu didn’t look that intriguing so we walked a block over to samuel beckett’s pub. the pub was dressed in your normal irish decor. carolyn ordered the house red and i a lagunitas ipa. the menu also showcased typical irish fare. carolyn ordered the meatloaf and i the fish and chips. my plate was pretty awful. the fish was definitely frozen and greasy. her plate looked good except the mushrooms that fucked it all up for me.

we left the pub and made our way to the theatre. it was very modern looking inside with large aluminum pipes to vent the venue. we made our way to the small stainless steel bar and immediately ordered a couple drinks. unbeknownst to us, the gentleman beside us is a celebrity in his own right.

stella

meet tim stella, conductor of phantom on broadway. his wife, florence lacey (a legend on broadway) was playing the part of ida straus. she did a phenomenal job.

we were at the bar for about 30 minutes drinking bourbon and wine and tim was a gracious person entertaining us with his stories of theater and commuting to ny from ct six days a week. i couldn’t imagine driving 4 hours each way tuesday through sunday. crazy. i supposed that’s why i’m a spoiled public servant!

anyway, the show was incredible. the camaraderie was splendid. i look forward to seeing another show at signature. it was an incredible day.
